There are several reasons your MagicJack would not work.
  1. You are not logged on to your Windows user account. Log On.(if you want to use MagicJack without logging on to your user account I will describe that at the end)
  2. MagicJack is not running (click shortcut placed on your desktop to run)
  3. MagicJack is not secured in the USB port. (ensure its got a good connection to the port)
  4. The phone cord is not secured or is broken. (press the phone cord firmly into the MagicJack and the phone or replace the cord)
  5. You are not connected to the internet. (connect to the internet)
  6. Your MagicJack device is broken. (return device for new one)

If you need to run MagicJack without being logged in to windows, you can have the system start the program as a system service and it will be running even at the welcome screen. Note that you will not see a dialpad. That is normal.

### Running MagicJack as System ###

  1. Cloce MagicJack, remove the device, and reinsert the device.
  2. After the shortcut is placed on the desktop, right click the shortcut, select properties, and take note of the location of the "mjusbsp" folder. (usualy in "C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\"
  3. Copy the "mjusbsp" folder to the root of the c drive. (c:\mjusbsp)
  4. Download and install the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools from here rktools.exe (works with all windows)
  5. Install the service. Details below:

HOW TO CREATE A USER-DEFINED SERVICE

SUMMARY

The Windows NT Resource Kit provides two utilities that allow you to create a Windows NT user-defined service for Windows NT applications and some 16-bit applications (but not for batch files).

Instrsrv.exe installs and removes system services from Windows NT and Srvany.exe allows any Windows NT application to run as a service.

MORE INFORMATION

To create a Windows NT user-defined service, perform the following steps:
  1. At a MS-DOS command prompt(running CMD.EXE), type the following command:

    path\INSTSRV.EXE My Service path\SRVANY.EXE

where path is the drive and directory of the Windows NT Resource Kit (i.e., C:\RESKIT) and My Service is the name of the service you are creating.

Example: C:\Program Files\Resource Kit\Instsrv.exe MagicJack C:\Program Files\Resource Kit\Srvany.exe NOTE: To verify that the service was created correctly, check the registry to verify that the ImagePath value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MagicJack is set to point to SRVANY.EXE. If this is not set correctly, the service will stop shortly after it starts and return an Event ID 7000 "The service name failed to start."

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" online Help topic or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" online Help topics in Registry Editor.

NOTE: You should back up the registry before you edit it.
  2. Run Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe)and locate the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MagicJack From the Edit menu, click Add Key. Type the following and click OK:

  3. Key Name: Parameters
    Class : <leave blank>
  4. Select the Parameters key.
  5. From the Edit menu, click Add Value. Type the following and click OK:

    Value Name: Application
    Data Type : REG_SZ
    String : C:\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe
  6. Close Registry Editor.

By default, a newly created service is configured to run Automatically when the system is restarted.

Now before restarting your computer, make sure the old MagicJack software is deleted. Delete the "mjusbsp" folder from

c:\documents and settings\username\application data.

delete the shortcut from your desktop.

delete from startup if it exists. Start menu --> programs --> startup

Now restart your computer and wait a couple minutes for system services to load. Check to see if you have dial tone.
