Why is my garage door opening after I close it?

Your garage door is programmed to travel a certain distance before it closes. If it closes before that distance has been traveled, it thinks something is wrong - and it reopens to help prevent any damage or safety risk. ... In cases like this, your "travel down" setting simply needs to be adjusted to the new distance.

The LiftMaster 8550 is a popular garage door opener. The LiftMaster 8550 has an automatic reversing system, which means that it can detect if something is in the way and then reverse the garage door opening motion. If the sensors are not working properly, then the garage door will open after shutting.

To fix this problem, check to see if the sensors are functioning properly by using your hand to cover them up while you close the garage door.
