If the screen is not recognizing input (neither stylus nor touch), it may be due to debris in the rectangular margins of the screen underneath the black plastic. This debris is recognized as screen input, thus locking up everything else! I found a crumb in my daughter's LeapPad2 that was carefully removed with the corner of an envelope. After doing this and cleaning the screen with a microfiber cloth, it worked great.
Good luck!
