First I would make sure that the thermostat for the freezer wasn't changed to a lower setting. Once verified that it has not been changed I would raise it some to see if the freezer tempreture rises. You will need to put a digital thermometer inside the freezer to monitor the temp and accertain just what is going on.

If this doesn't change the tempreture of the freezer you need a new thermostat. Should be available at http://www.repairclinic.com . They also have excellent installation instructions on their website.

The water does not go through the freezer, except for the water being used by the icemaker, and should be cooled on the refrigerator side. I would replace the filter first. It is probably due anyway for changing. If this does not solve the problem check the temp on refrigerator side. It may be too low and causing the water to freeze.

The light problem is either the bulb is blown or the switch is bad or sticking. Checking the bulb requires a DVM set to ohms. You want to see a low resistance, about 100 ohms or so. These bulbs are special and made to survive the cold so don't use an ordinary bulb. It will not last long. If the bulb is ok check that the switch on the door jamb somewhere is not hanging up. It should make connection when the door is opened. If it isn't working properly replace it. Parts available at repairclinic.com .

If your problem is the freezer is building up frost I would look at the heater within the freezer. With the unit unplugged you should be able to disconnect the wires to the heater and check it with a DVM to see that it has a low but not zero resistance. If the element is ok you should replace the defrost cycle control mechanism. Again http://www.repairclinic.com should be able to provide the parts and instructions.

Between the two systems, thermostat or defrost, one is bad.
