The machine is made to automatically shut off. (Please see this manual page: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/370280/Kenmore-54501-50-Pint-Dehumidifier.html?page=5#manual.) If it's not doing that, it's defective, and should be returned to the retailer or (if too late) repaired or replaced under the warranty. You can call Sears at 800-427-3049 or 847-289-2500 or 800-549-4505. Expect to be referred to a nearby Sears Service Center.
