If your vehicle starts up but dies when given gas, there could be several possible causes. Here are some potential reasons:
  1. Clogged fuel filter: A clogged fuel filter can restrict the flow of fuel to the engine, causing it to stall when you give it gas. This is a common issue in older vehicles, and it can be fixed by replacing the fuel filter.
  2. Dirty or faulty mass airflow sensor: The mass airflow sensor measures the amount of air coming into the engine and sends this information to the engine control unit (ECU). If the sensor is dirty or faulty, it can send incorrect information to the ECU, causing the engine to stall. Cleaning or replacing the mass airflow sensor can resolve this issue.
  3. Faulty fuel pump: A faulty fuel pump can also cause the engine to stall when you give it gas. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel from the tank to the engine, and if it's not working properly, the engine won't receive enough fuel to run. A mechanic can test the fuel pump to see if it needs to be replaced.
  4. Vacuum leak: A vacuum leak can cause the engine to stall when you give it gas because it disrupts the air/fuel mixture. A vacuum leak occurs when there's a crack or hole in the intake manifold, vacuum hoses, or other parts of the engine. A mechanic can locate and repair the vacuum leak.
  5. Faulty throttle position sensor: The throttle position sensor tells the ECU how far the throttle is open. If the sensor is faulty, it can send incorrect information to the ECU, causing the engine to stall. Replacing the throttle position sensor can resolve this issue.

These are just a few of the possible causes of an engine that starts up and dies when given gas. It's best to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair the issue to ensure that it's fixed correctly.

One thing to remember when starting for the first time in spring is to use freshly mixed fuel. Old fuel loses its effectiveness sitting through the winter.

You could also check the carb settings. Check this link for information on setting up.
