- Vacuum leaks: A vacuum leak can cause the engine to idle erratically or rev high. Check for disconnected or damaged vacuum hoses or intake manifold gaskets.
- Dirty or clogged idle air control valve (IACV): The IACV controls the idle speed by regulating the amount of air that bypasses the throttle plate. A dirty or clogged IACV can cause the engine to rev high or stall at idle.
- Faulty throttle position sensor (TPS): The TPS informs the engine control module (ECM) of the position of the throttle plate. A faulty TPS can cause the engine to idle erratically or rev high.
- Malfunctioning ECM: The ECM is responsible for controlling the engine's idle speed. If it's not functioning properly, it may cause the engine to rev high or stall.
- Sticky or dirty throttle body: The throttle body controls the airflow into the engine. If it's dirty or sticking, it can cause the engine to idle erratically or rev high.
If you're not comfortable troubleshooting these potential problems yourself, it's best to take your Honda Civic to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
