Does It Hurt The Automatic Transmission To Shift Into Neutral When Going Downhil
Driving around town -- few trips more than 10 miles -- I can improve our car's gas mileage from around 20 mpg to 22 or more. That's around 10% -- but if it can damage the automatic transmission, it's hardly worth it.

While I cannot say this with 100% confidence, I would will be willing to wager it does not hurt the transmission. In an automatic transmission, neutral is designed to effectively disconnect the transmission from the driven roadwheels, so the vehicle is able to move freely under its own weight and gain momentum without the motive force from the engine. So when in neutral, the movement of the vehicle does not affect the transmission.
