Has anyone actually earned from this site? I want to help people but I wonder if it is a scam or if it is legit.

HelpOwl is definitely not a scam. I've been a member for years. You can earn points for multiple activities -- asking questions, answering questions, submitting user manuals, etc. -- and when you accumulate enough points you can redeem them for gift cards.
