I Cannot Read My New Gmail. How Do I Scroll Through It?

Since gmail has launched its "new look," I am unable to read my email at all or with any ease.  The scroll tool on the side of the page seems to scroll down the "background" but not the email message itself. How do I scroll through an email in order to see the entire message to the end?
