Hood Exhaust Is Not Pulling The Smoke So That It Vents The Exhaust To The Outsid

We just used this for the first time, and the smoke just lingered. My husband hooked it up so the smoke would go outside, but it's not even drawn into the hood, my kitchen was smoky. please tell what can be done to fix this. Thank you!
