There are many ways you can customize your Garmin 50 or any Garmin for that matter. Once you save favorites, you can edit them to show different icons such as a shopping cart for stores, a tent for campsites, etc. This option must be changed for every favorite you want to edit.
You can also get more advanced and save custom POIs (Points of Interest) to your device. First, you will need Garmin's 'POI Loader' software, found here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-12. Then, check out POI Factory to learn how to set up custom POIs in your device: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85.
Lastly, you can change the vehicle that shows while you are driving and even the voices that speak the directions to you. Go to the Garmin Garage here: http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles.
