Had similar happen. Would not stay on even plugged in to the auto power supply, which was working. Unit would start to boot then die.
What worked:
Placed unit on usb connection to PC.
Unit was recognized by PC and by the unit. Ran the update for map twice as first said map was current, which it wasn't.
Installed the new map. Noticed battery was at the dead end of the spectrum. Left the unit on for a few hours to charge.
Disconnected the unit and currently is working ok.
You'll need Garmin's Updater software to complete the software and firmware end of the solution. This unit has also had temperature reactions, and possibly some rf susceptible interference with high power tx sources nearby i.e. jamming loads.
