How Long Do I Charge My New Garmin S2 For The First Time?

How long for a full charge each and every time? On the charger it keeps getting progressive foiled out in black but goes back to white then in 3 stages fills up again. How do I tell if it is fully charged with the charger on? Is it possible? Do I have to take the charger off to tell if it is fully charged?
