Possibly Power Steering Pump Going Out

First...I have a 1998 Ford Taurus SHO with the (8cyl engine....similar to that in a late 90's model Crown Victoria)   When I turn the steering wheel (sharply or NOT), there is a "grinding noise" (it sounds similar to when my brakes were going  bad on another car). It ONLY makes this sound when I turn the wheel. The farther I turn, the louder it is (loudest when making a U-turn or 3-point (A.K.A. "K") turn.  Is it possible that my power steering may be malfunctioning? the fluid looks to be about half full.
