Need Help Changing Email Address

I tried to change my email address but it says it's used by another FB account. I don't have another FB account and I've had the email address for years. What should I do?

To update the email addresses listed on your Facebook account:

Click at the top-right corner of any Facebook page and select Settings
Click General in the column on the left and then click the Email section
Click Remove to delete an address from your account or click Add another email to add a new email to your account
Save your changes
Enter your password (for security purposes)

When you add a new email address to your account we'll send you a confirmation email. Click the link in the email to confirm you want this email address added to your Facebook account. Then, use this email address to log into Facebook.

Go to General settings, click email, click add another email. Do as it says and confirm email. Then go back to general settings, email. You should see your new email address with a remove written in blue next to it. Click on the email circle/button you want as your primary (even though remove is written next to it). DO NOT CLICK REMOVE just input your password to save the changes and it will default to the button you clicked on (again highlight the circle/button but DO NOT CLICK REMOVE). The change will occur.
