There is a great page on eHow.com that lists how to cancel your Facebook account. The URL is http://www.ehow.com/how_4738311_cancel-facebook-account.html.

Here are the steps they list:

  1. Go to www.facebook.com
  2. Enter your Email and Password, and sign into your current account.
  3. Once you are the main page, look up to the top right of the screen and click "settings".
  4. On the bottom of the next screen you will find the "Deactivate Account" section. Click "deactivate". (This will not cancel your account yet).
  5. On the next screen, Facebook.com will ask you "Why are you deactivating" and will give you options to choose from. They will also give you space to explain further. Lastly, you can opt out of receiving emails from your Facebook friends. If you do not opt out, you will still receive emails for event invites, picture tags, and requests to join groups.
  6. Click the red, "Deactivate My Account" button. Your account will now be cancelled.

Once your account has been deactivated for I think it is (2) weeks, your account will be null.  I don't think there is a way to completely delete yourself and your information from their databases, or from their affiliates and their databases.

Simply deactivating your account does NOT cancel your account.

On your Facebook page go to account on the top right hand side, click on account settings. The last option on that page is deactivate account. That will cancel it for you.
