Why Won't The Water Dispenser Work?

The water dispenser stopped working when the filter was at just about the six-month mark. I removed the old one and inserted the new one. When I depressed the water lever, I could hear a pump working, but no water came out. When I pressed the latch on the filter catch, the filter shot out of the refrigerator like a rocket. I tried several more times with no luck; although, the new filter clearly is full of water. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mark O'Brien
