I Have A 2011 Dodge Slt 1500 4.7 2wd Outdoorsman

Why does the engine knock/rattle. After buying it brand new and putting about 1000 on it, it knocks on start up and continues the whole time. Is this a problem with the 4.7 engine. What should I do, it is not a Hemi or a diesel, but it sounds like one. It is embrassing me and Dodge. I am a woman and have always done easy gentle driving in it.

Check your owner's manual to see what octane level of fuel is required. It will probably be either 87 or 89. Newer cars sometimes have higher octane requirements due to the company trying to squeeze more horsepower out of the engine. They do this by advancing the ignition (which is probably more than you wanted to know). To fix the knock, make sure you are using at least the minimum octaine level recommended. I have noticed that a lot of more rural areas carry gasoline that is below 87 and should not be used in most modern cars. If the rating is 87 and you are using 87 (usually regular, but you can check the yellow button at the pump), you may have other issues. I would try using premium gasoline for a couple of tanks along with a fuel injector cleaner (you can get it from inside the gas station). If the engine is still knocking, take it to a mechanic. If you are using an octane rating below the recommended, start using the correct gas and the problem should go away pretty qucikly.
