If the check engine light is illuminated on your 1996 Dodge Ram Van, it means that the engine management system has detected a fault or issue that requires attention. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and fix the problem:
  1. Use an OBD-II scanner to read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the engine control module (ECM). These codes will give you a better idea of the specific issue that is causing the check engine light to turn on. You can purchase an OBD-II scanner or borrow one from an auto parts store.
  2. Look up the DTCs in the vehicle's service manual or online to identify the specific problem. The code will provide a general idea of the problem, but further troubleshooting may be required to pinpoint the exact cause.
  3. Check for any obvious signs of damage or wear on the engine components, such as damaged hoses, loose connections, or worn-out parts. If you find any issues, repair or replace them as necessary.
  4. Clear the DTCs using the OBD-II scanner and monitor the check engine light to see if it comes back on. If it does, the problem may not have been fully resolved, and further diagnosis and repair are necessary.
  5. If you're unsure about how to diagnose or fix the problem, take your vehicle to a trusted mechanic or dealership for further assistance. They will have the tools and expertise to diagnose and fix the issue properly.

Remember, a check engine light can indicate a range of problems, from minor issues to serious engine problems. It's essential to address the problem as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your vehicle.

When the Check Engine light comes on, it means that the onboard diagnostic (OBD) system in your vehicle has detected a problem with one or more of the components in the engine or emission control system. Here are some steps you can take to address a Check Engine light malfunction:
  1. Check the gas cap: A loose or damaged gas cap can cause the Check Engine light to come on. Make sure that the gas cap is properly tightened and in good condition. If it is loose or damaged, replace it with a new one.
  2. Check for other symptoms: If there are other symptoms such as rough running, stalling, or reduced power, this could indicate a more serious problem. Take note of any other symptoms and report them to your mechanic.
  3. Use an OBD-II scanner: An OBD-II scanner can read the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the vehicle's OBD system. This can help pinpoint the specific problem that is causing the Check Engine light to come on. You can purchase an OBD-II scanner or borrow one from an auto parts store. Once you have the DTCs, look up their meanings and potential causes online or in a repair manual.
  4. Address the issue: Once you have identified the problem, take appropriate steps to address it. This may involve replacing a sensor, repairing a wiring issue, or replacing a component. Depending on the severity of the issue, you may need to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic or dealer for repair.
  5. Clear the codes: Once you have addressed the issue, use the OBD-II scanner to clear the DTCs from the system. This will turn off the Check Engine light. If the problem has been fully resolved, the light should stay off. If it comes back on, there may be another issue that needs to be addressed.

In summary, when the Check Engine light comes on, it is important to take it seriously and address the issue promptly. By following the steps outlined above, you can identify the problem and take appropriate action to keep your vehicle running smoothly.
