My Dell Inspiron 17 N7110 Overheats Instantly Shutting Off. How Do I Fix This?

It used to occur occasionally when I would work for long periods of time.  Now it is occuring more frequently.  Sometimes as often as 2-3 times within an hour. Fan seems to be working, but it gets VERY hot. The area is clear around it and laptop is actually elevated about 3/4" off the work surface all around to allow for good air circulation.  It has become unreliable with the frequency that it is occuring and is depended on for critical business.  What can I do to fix this?
