Snapping Noises And Green Boxes When Changing Channels

When changing channels on the main tv, there are snapping and harsh sounds, and green boxes and a delay in the appearance of the channel I have gone through the unplugging and turning off power sequence with no results. We think it is the dvr receiver, which we've only had for a few months--we've had the problem for a few months too. Can you help?
