If you are having trouble removing the filter nut from an old filter on a Craftsman 17965 air compressor, there are a few things you can try:
  1. Use penetrating oil: Apply a penetrating oil such as WD-40 to the filter nut and let it sit for a few minutes to help loosen any rust or corrosion that may be holding the nut in place.
  2. Use a filter wrench: A filter wrench is a tool specifically designed to remove filter nuts. The jaws of the wrench will fit snugly around the filter nut, providing the leverage you need to break it loose.
  3. Use pliers: If you don't have a filter wrench, you can try using a pair of pliers. Grip the filter nut firmly and turn it counterclockwise to remove it.
  4. Use heat: If none of the above options work, you can try heating the nut with a propane torch, be careful not to overheat the plastic parts around it. The heat will help to expand the metal and make it easier to remove.
  5. If none of the above steps resolves the issue, it may be a problem with the filter or the filter nut, and you should contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center for further assistance.

Please keep in mind that removing the filter nut requires some force and care, be sure to protect the surrounding parts and make sure the compressor is unplugged and disconnected from the power source before attempting to remove the filter nut.
