Sputtering, hesiating, and jerking makes me think spark plugs, coil caps, or bad fuel. These new fangled motors have gone away from the old distributor / wires / plugs we all new and loved and have gone over to coils that mount on each plug and are fed by low voltage. These coils fail more often then the old style single coil (at least in my opinion). If my Jeep Wrngler (a Chrysler product as well) starts acting as you describe it usually means my coil pack is dying.

I would start cheap. Get good quality gas, i.e. Shell, Chevron, etc. Someplace that gets consistent gas. Yes it's more expensive but at least they don't buy it on the open gas market. Also add some fuel treatment/cleaner. Lucas Oil makes a great additive to clean injectors and fuel lines. Walmart and any auto parts store should have it. Change your plugs. Get good 60,000 mile platimun plugs. Bosch makes some real nice no-gap plugs. These never require gapping. If you get regular Platinum plugs make sure they get gapped properly. After that if things still are rough try the coils.

If all that doesn't have an effect there may be internal issue with the motor. Time for a mechanic...

Good luck.
