Poor Gas Mileage

I have a new 2011 Equinox.  Has 500 miles on the odometer.  I'm averaging 14.9mpg.  Is this all I can expect out of this vehicle.  My husband has a 4x4 pick-up with a V8 engine and he's averaging the same mileage.  WTH??????
