First rule is do NOT remove the serpentine belt tensioner! Some people will tell you that's the fastest way to do it, but they're wrong. You can do it with the tensioner still on the car, but you have to know how to do it correctly.

Second rule is to take pictures of the routing of the serpentine belt (if it's still there and didn't break). There is a diagram of the routing of the belt near the water pump, but sometimes a picture is better than a diagram in case you forget how it goes later on.

To remove the old belt (assuming it didn't already break), take a 3/8" ratchet and stick the square end into the square hole on the belt tensioner. Push the ratchet and tensioner back toward the firewall. That will give you enough slack to remove the belt. Having someone to help you remove the belt makes it much easier, but you can do it by yourself.

To install a new belt, route the belt correctly around all the pulleys, except the water pump pulley. Save that pulley for when you are ready to complete the belt installation. Take the ratchet and place it in the tensioner hole again and push back toward the firewall. Have a friend place the belt over the water pump as you do this. It should go over the pump pulley without too much effort. Again, you can do this yourself, but it is much easier with two people doing it.

Slowly release the belt tensioner until the belt is tightly in place. It should line up on all the pulleys or you will damage the belt when you start the car. When you are sure that it is lined up, start the car and it should work correctly.

P.S. Here's a diagram of the setup showing you how you push the ratchet back toward the firewall as you place the belt on the water pump pulley.
