Fax Set Up

We just bought the 4 in 1 printer. Currently we have a phone jax that has two outlets one has a filter for the phone and the other goes to the computer. If I take the one that goes to the phone and connect it to the Fax, do I still have to use the filter where it is now or connect it to the fax for the phone to be placed there?
