Here's the answer supplied at JustAnswer.com:

Some problems could be:

Packaging material was left inside the printer.
An ink tanks are not seated properly.
Paper is jammed or there is an object inside the printer.

So we need to open the printer and check. For opening the printer, please see illustrations at

http://kbsupport.cusa.canon.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1011&PARTITION_ID=1&secureFlag=false&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=40079

Can you make sure the ink cartridges are installed correctly for each color and are pushed/connected securely? For example (it's for a different model, but it's an example):
http://canoncanada.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11015/~/lcd-error%3A-error-c000

For removing/replacing catridges for this model, you can see at

http://kbsupport.cusa.canon.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1011&PARTITION_ID=1&secureFlag=false&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=40139

There may be a white polystyrene (protective foam) inside the printer we need to remove; for example:
