195 Buick Century Check Engine Light Problem

My girlfriend has a 1995 buick century, we went to get it smogged and accordingto the test results it pretty much passed but the service engine soon light comes on and goes off. I bought the obd code scanner for her car the obd 1 but the engine light stays on and wont flash when trying to test for trouble codes. The manual that comes with the tester says that the problem with the light staying on needs to be fixed before continuing, so my question is what do i look for? Cause the whole reason for getting the scanner was to find out why the light is on in the first place/\.
