Brother Hl-2280dw Won't Scan
Brother HL-2280DW prints fine but won't scan. Worked up until yesterday. Error message: Failed to connect to device.

I had the same question but after spending about an hour with 2 different Brother tech support people, it turned out that my upgrade to Windows 8 was the problem. The drivers that came with the printer were for XP, Vista, Win 7, etc. I had to first uninstall Brother Utilities and then go to the Brother website and get the drivers for Windows 8.1 64-bit (you'd pick whatever is appropriate for your system). After installing and restarting, the scanner now works!
