Machine Suddenly Stopped

I was sewing, and the machine stopped instantly.  It is a Virtuosa 150 model and was bought in 2000.  Would a motor just suddenly stop or could it be another problem.  There doesn't seem to be any thread caught anywhere.  The light turns on, but the machine just doesn't operate.
