Are there any charges for luggage in international flights? How many peaces of luggage a passanger is allowed?

I'm traveling to Brazil and found out American allows me two pieces of checked baggage at no charge. However, for flights to Europe, most other places in South America, and the Caribbean, they do charge for luggage.
