Generally you are allowed one free checked bag and one free carry-on for international flights. It depends, however, on your destination. Travel from the US to China or Japan allows 2 free checked bags. You really need to go AA's website and look up baggage for your destination. Size and dimension is also an important aspect of your "free allowance" including carry-on and checked.
