why doesnt my screen turn on but the rest of the computer powers up

This can be caused by the screen invertor/backlight failing- if so, it can be replaced.
If you take the laptop into a dark room (or, cover yourself over ) and try to see if there is a very faint image- if there is- then it is probably the invertor.
Sometimes it is worth aplying pressure to the right of the mousepad, and if it gives a bit of a show on the screen, then this could be a graphics chip problem, and this will be a motherboard problem, as it is integrated.
