New System Problem.

I tried to migrate from my existing att.net account to the new one that is supposed to be the replacement effective 31 March.  I'm on a DSL system.  When I followed the instructions, they told me to give area code and prefix, whcih I did, then it came back and told me it couldn't connect.  If this new system is dial-up, which it now appears to be, why is it supposed to be better than the existing one through DSL which has been working just fine?  How do I fix it?  I don't want to lose all my data and files.
