The short answer to your question is, yes, a lot of food gets thrown out.

The long answer is that most supermarkets do a very good job of minimizing this waste. Almost all departments, especially ones with perishable items, order to sell out and should come very close to running out before their next order arrives. Think about that the next time your supermarket is out of fresh wild salmon. Would they really bring in one extra twenty pound case just to sell you an eight ounce fillet at 8PM the night before fresh fish arrives? Depends on the market and how aggressively the store wants to capture sales, but mostly, no.

It depends over the internet and in consumer forums there was n number of complaints against them for selling expired items. And apart from that they have a system in place to dispose expired goods.

Thanks

Some expired products can be eaten by some animals like the poultry( like fowls) ... The expired product to may be harmful to us but not likely with them hence serving as their meal which leads to production(eggs, meat)

Although there is a difference in how long the expiration date varies depending on the product, the company says that quality has not changed ...

eventually If you purchase an expired product or notice that your local store often sells old goods, here are some things you can do. If you accidentally buy a product that is past its expiration date, return it to the store for an exchange or refund.

You could even bundle items AND offer a discount on the bundle if you're trying to move as much stock out of your warehouse as quickly as possible. Liquidate Your Items If your customers refuse to buy your obsolete inventory, no matter how much you market, discount, and bundle it, then you can always sell your excess stock to liquidation organizations.
