Instant Messenger Problems

I want to use the regular stand alone Instant messenger, but when I open the page to check my yahoo mail, another Instant Messenger opens up, and it does not work together with the other one. Constantly showing messages in the wrong place and trying to close out the other one. How can this be stopped ? I need to have the stand alone open and working and be able to check my mail at the same time and not have a damn goat rope on my hands !!
