Strange White Brittle Material Came Out Of Washer.

I have had my duet washer and dryer for many years with a lot of use.  No problems the entire time.  The other day I took a load out of the washer and attached to the clothing was a bunch of white pieces of some sort of material.  It is brittle, and sticks to the clothing.  Now the washer bangs like crazy during the spin cycle.  Any ideas?
