Glass Top Stoves

You can save money if and only if you are able to do the job yourself. The new cooktop will cost a couple hundred bucks. It should be available through your local appliance parts supplier. To replace the cooktop you'll want to have a helper nearby.

Unplug the stove. Put on safety glasses and gloves.
Remove the screws across the front edge of the cooktop above the oven door.
Lift up the cooktop and look underneath.
Procedure A:
If you see quick-disconnects on the wiring of the elements (near the back, under the glass) you're in luck. Unclip those and remove the screw holding the (green) ground wire. The cooktop should come off its hinges at the back. Place the old cooktop upside down on a hard floor (so you don't get glass in your carpet) and move the heating elements from the old cooktop to the new one. Pay close attention to use the same screw holes as the original assembly. You may need to transfer the hinges (in the rear) and a strip of metal (across the front edge of the glass) from the old cooktop to the new one.
Procedure B:
If you don't see quick disconnects on the wires, you'll have to do the same steps as Procedure A - while working under the glass. Support and unscrew the front burners first, then the rear. (That's what your helpers are for.) Remove the broken cooktop from the hinges.

Use a vacuum cleaner to get any chips of glass off the heating elements. Be aware the elements are extremely delicate and fragile. If you use a cordless nut driver, use the clutch. Don't over-tighten the screws. The metal is coated in porcelain which can fracture, sending shards of ceramic across the room.
Reassemble in the reverse order.
