How Does One Remove The Metal Disc Under The Timer Knob?

This disc seems to be connected to the black plastic control knob by three small protrusions through the disc. I can see no way to remove this disc except by shaving off the protrusions then sliding the disc off them. any help would be greatly appreciated.lpqs
