SIM card can store 10 SMS. But most of the phones store SMS and call log not to SIM but to phone. You have to copy it to new phone. Ask your service provider, many of them will do it for you even for free.

If you have Android phone, you can use some app to make backup to SD card. Or you can use some software for PC to do it, like MobilEdit.
