Keeping My Old Phone

I am currently a customer with sprint and i am very unhappy with them and im thinking about switching over to virgin mobile in Febuary after 2 yr contract is up, but im concerned that im going to have to loose my phone if i switch over, Is there a way i could keep my current phone but switch over to your company or would i have to buy a whole new phone?
