International Calls
I will be going to Spain and Germany next week, will my phone work there when I want to call home in California, or do I just text? How much would that be?

You will only be able to call from germany/spain if you have a "world" phone. The most known world phone would be the blackberry world edition, but I'm sure there are more available. You would also not be able to text if it is not a world phone. You will not be able to receive service while you are there if the requirement is not met. You would know if it is a world phone, because you would also be paying more at the time of use. My recommendation (I was in Germany about 2 years ago) is to buy a calling card once you arrive. If you run out of minutes on the card, you can always call the toll free number on the back of the card and add minutes by paying a fee. This fee can be put on any credit/debit card.
