It is possible to have your cell number changed with Verizon Wireless, if the account is listed under your name, if the account is part of a Family Plan then only the Master or the Primary subscriber on the account can change the number. You can't change just the area code; you'll have to get a whole new number.

The best time to change your phone number is on your billing cycle. This will avoid any billing confusion and proration as the bill would be divided showing the old and new phone numbers. .

You can change your number quickly over the phone by calling Customer Service Department at 1-800-922-0204 (or *611) then listen to the prompts. When you are calling to change your number you need to call from your house phone or any other phone besides your cell because they will be needing to re-program your cell so you can't be on it. A $15.00 fee may apply if you change the number through customer service over the phone or at a corporate store.

Additionally, if you wish to avoid the $15.00 fee, you can change your wireless number online by signing in to “My Verizon” http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/index.html?tab=myaccount using your Account Owner user ID and password.Once you're logged in you'll click on the MyServices tab and then click MyPhone. On the left handside of the page you'll see a column that starts with MyPhone Actions. Below that you'll see the link to change your phone number.  Just walk through the steps to select a new number, once it's changed you'll need to dial *228 and select option number 1 to reprogram you phone. After successful programming, do a free test call by dialing #832(send) on your device for confirmation.

Keep in mind that changing your number will erase your voicemail box. So you'll lose your greeting and any saved messages that you have.
