Refund On A Non-refundable Ticket

Bought a vacation package on Expedia to Paris & Rome in October, 2009 for travel in September, 2010. Unfortunately, my husband was laid off in March, 2010 and is still unemployed. Expedia refunded the hotel, however, our airline tickets are non-refundable. They said we have 1 year from when the tickets were purchased to travel. In other words, we need to travel to Paris & Rome on United and/or Lufthansa by the end of October, 2010, or we are out about $2,300 in airfare. Given the circumstances and that we can provide proof my husband was laid off, can we request a refund or at least get another year extension on the airline credit?
