Cats On Board?

I have two cats and need to take them with me for an international flight to Germany. The flight I chose goes over JFK before going to FRA, will my cats be taken care of? Do I have to check them out in JFK and check them in again there - The first leg of the journey is done by US Airways, but the second part is done by Singapore Airlines ... does it work at all?

Your question is very complicated because not only are you trying to take 2 pets on board, you are traveling on 2 different airlines AND are traveling to an international destination.

Have you asked US Airways about their pet policies? According to their website, they don't allow carry on pets on flights to Europe. Some airlines will allow you to transport your pet as cargo, but again, that too can be complicated. If you are traveling on US Air and Singapore on one airline ticket (not issued separately) then it's probable the ticket was validated on Singapore since they are the over-the-water carrier and you would need to contact them for their international pet policies.

You're smart to ask these questions now so you have time to plan contingencies if needed.

From US Airways website:

Passenger cabin

Planning to travel with a pet? Book your trip online, and then call 800-428-4322 to book and pay for your pet.

You can also book and pay for your pet with an agent at the airport on the day of travel. However, only 6 pets total are allowed on each flight, so we recommend you book in advance.

Rules & regulations

Please keep in mind:

  • You may carry on one small domestic dog, cat or bird in the passenger cabin for an additional $125 each way.
  • You may carry on a second pet only if you pay for an extra seat. No additional pet fee will be charged for the second pet.
  • Pets must remain inside their approved container under the seat directly in front of you.
  • Remember, a pet in the cabin counts toward your carry-on baggage allowance, so pack accordingly.
  • Carry-on pets are not allowed on flights to and from Europe; South America; the Middle East; Antigua; Bridgetown, Barbados; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and St. Lucia.
  • Only dogs and cats are allowed on flights to and from Costa Rica. Contact the embassy or consulate at least 4 weeks before you travel. Call 800-428-4322 for more information.
  • If you're on a flight with one of our codeshare partners, please check with that airline for its carry-on pet policies and fees.
