Removal (Paseo & Tercel) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Remove grease cap, cotter pin, nut lock and bearing nut. See Fig. 7 . Remove brake drum, outer bearing and thrust washer as an assembly. To remove drum, turn parking brake shoe adjuster to release shoes from drum (if necessary). Installation 1. Pack wheel bearings with multipurpose grease. Coat inside of axle hub and grease cap with multipurpose grease. Install brake drum, outer bearing and thrust washer. Temporarily install bearing nut. Tighten bearing nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m) while turning drum. Loosen nut until it can be turned by hand. Using spring scale, measure rotational preload. 2. Slowly tighten bearing nut until rotational preload is 0-2.6 lbs. (0-1.18 kg). Install nut lock and NEW cotter pin. Install grease cap. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Check and adjust rear brake shoe clearance. See REAR BRAKE SHOES .

You need a punch and hammer to knock out the old race and a race installer or brass punch to install new races without damaging them.
