Recording A Video To Dvd

i have set it up. and go to vcr then pause then dvd then record then press dubbing. when i play it back there is no picture. first time we got it to record the works dubbing to dvd came across in front. now i dont get anything. will you please give me the steps to record the vcr tape to the dve tape. i am using rw,
