Should The Word Check Engine Appear When Starting The Car?

The Check Engine (or similar) light will illuminate during start up on almost every make and model of vehicle - this is completely normal. If it stays lit for more than about 5 seconds after starting, or turns off but then comes back on, there is likely another issue and it should get checked.
