When Projector Switched On Coloured Lines Start Creeping Across The Screen

would this have anything to do with the lamp or is it likely to be something else

The unusual colored lines appearing indicate that there are some problems in the lamp/bulb of your Sony VPL EX5. Unfortunately, the only way you can fix this issue is by replacing the bulb. You can buy a replacement bulb online from the links provided below.
